π April Groundskeeping Guide β Prep Your Cricket and Bowling Greens for Peak Performance
As winter loosens its grip and spring growth kicks in, April is a pivotal month for cricket squares and bowling greens. With careful planning and execution now, you can ensure surfaces are durable, true and visually impeccable all season long. This guide covers key tasks β from overseeding and fertilising to mowing and pitch marking β with product recommendations directly from Battersby Sports Ground Supplies Ltd to help you deliver consistency underfoot.
π± 1. Start With Soil and Surface Prep
πΎ Soil Condition & Aeration
Before you get into seeding and top dressing, ensure soil isnβt compacted. If the soil profile is dense after winter rain, consider light aeration or hollow coring to relieve compaction and improve seed-to-soil contact. This step is also critical for water infiltration and root establishment. Although you should avoid aeration on your cricket square from February onwards.
π± 2. Overseeding β Thickening the Sward
Overseeding is essential for both cricket squares and bowling greens β introducing fresh, vigorous grass improves density, repair from winter wear and wear-tolerance.
π― For the cricket square, choose robust seed mixes:
- Hurrells Cricket Square Renovation Grass Seed β mycorrhizae treated, ideal for a dense, wear-tolerant surface. Hurrells Cricket Square Renovation Grass Seed 8120β―(Mycorrhizae treated)
- Hurrells Premium Cricket Square Renovation Grass Seed β slightly higher specification mix with exceptional disease resistance. Hurrells Premium Cricket Square Renovation Grass Seed 8112βMycorrhizae
π Seeding tips
- Sow at 25β50 g/mΒ², with a light overseeding rate of 20β30 g/mΒ² to infill thin spots and encourage denser growth. Ideal sowing depth is 10β15 mm.
- Aim to seed just after aeration to maximise seed to soil contact and germination. Use a sarrel roller on your ends to help create a seed bed for the seed, and lightly top dress. Remembering that aeration is to be avoided on cricket squares from February onwards.
- For bowling greens you might also consider bowling green-specific seed blends that tolerate extremely close mowing and heavy use β click here to vie available bowling green seed available on the Battersby site.Β
π 3. Top Dressing After Seeding
Β
Once seeds are down, top dressing helps protect and cover seed, improves soil structure, and smooths the surface.
π Battersby 70:30 Top Dressing β 25 kg
A sand/soil blend thatβs sterilised and screened for fine turf use β ideal for cricket and bowling greens. Battersby 70:30 Top Dressing β 25kg
Why Use It:
- Adds a fine protective layer over fresh seed without smothering.
- Improves drainage and root environment.
- Helps level out minor surface irregularities.
π Application: Spread 2β4 kg/mΒ² via shovel or spreader, and brush in gently to ensure seed coverage and moisture retention.
πΏ 4. Feeding With Fertilisers
Spring growth demands nutrients β especially nitrogen for top growth, potassium for stress resistance, and a balanced formulation overall.
Recommended Spring & Summer Feeds
- Battersby Spring & Summer Fertiliser: 11-5-5 β 20 kg β balanced NPK to stimulate green-up and root development. Battersby Spring & Summer Fertiliser 11β5β5 β 20kg
- Battersby Autunm & Winter Fertiliser 4-0-4 +4%fe βΒ can be used all year round if you require a lower nitrogen mix. The high iron content will green grass up without promoting top growth and will also blacken moss.
- Several other granular and liquid Spring/Summer fertilisers available directly from Battersby can fine-tune nutrition if needed (e.g., liquid formulations for quicker uptake).
Fertilising tips:
- Apply after your first mowing when grass has started active growth.
- For liquid fertilisers, a light application every 3β4 weeks can help maintain a consistent nutrient supply without excessive growth spikes.
βοΈ 5. Cutting β Get Your Heights Right
Cutting in April is all about establishing the correct height of cut (HOC) for both surface quality and playability.
Cricket: Aim for slightly higher first cuts β this encourages deeper rooting and reduces scalping. Gradually reduce height over successive cuts towards your match heights. Square height should be worked down to between 12-20mm, Each cut should not take more than 1/3 of the leaf.
Bowling Greens: These are typically maintained very low, but only lower the mower deck once the sward is consistently growing and the blade is sharp. Maintain a sharp cylinder mower β blunt blades can cause fraying and weaken the sward. Aiming for 6-10mm. Anything below this will cause damage to the crown of the plant.
π― 6. Rolling the Square & Bowling Greens
Rolling helps consolidate the surface, improves ball roll and delivery characteristics, and enhances aesthetics. Hereβs how to approach:
- Cricket square: Roll after mowing when surface is dry, not wet β over-rolling in moist conditions compacts ground. Rule of thumb, plasticine like consistency. Ideally rolling against the direction of play, in Union jack formation. Gradually build the weight up starting with a light roller and building weight towards the heavy roller as the ground begins to firm.
- Bowling greens: Light rolling between sessions keeps the true surface without surface distortion.
π§° 7. Squaring Off & Marking (Cricket Focus)
For cricket squares, accurate squaring and marking is vital for match readiness.
Squaring Off: Use consistent string lines and a sharp marking tool to define square boundaries and crease lines. Make sure the angles are exact β matches start and finish on your preparation. The 3/4/5 method to square off your square, visit our social media platforms to watch opur top tips video on how to successfully square off using the 3/4/5 method.
Marking: Permanent or semi-permanent chalk/paint systems make post-cut marking clear and durable. Our pitchmarker B plus bringing you bright white lines whilst also offering a budget friendly approach.
π― 8. Ongoing Maintenance β Keep It Consistent
Once the initial season prep is complete, stick to a regular routine:
β Weekly mowing with blade sharpening;
β Lighter rolling as growth stabilises;
β Follow-up overseeding on worn areas;
β Periodic light top dressing for level maintenance;
β Monitor nutrition and correct with liquid feeds as needed.
