The Importance of Fertiliser  

Soil is ‘healthy’ when it contains a lot of nutrients. Soils often lose their nutrients over time, with certain conditions affecting the rate of loss. These conditions include weather, temperature (both air temperature and the temperature of the soil itself), and how much the surface is being impacted by regular use.  

A quality fertiliser will top up these nutrients, and also ensures that those nutrients remain in the soil, keeping it healthy long term. 

If soil is lacking in nutrients, it won’t grow healthy grass. Even if you are reseeding the grass each year, soil without nutrients won’t have the ‘fuel’ needed to promote healthy growth. Nutrient content isn’t a constant across a large area either, so you will see patchiness that spoils the look of grass.  

Groundskeepers and club owners take great pride in how good their grass looks, and sports grounds need to be especially resilient throughout the seasons. To ensure it won’t disappoint, you need a grass fertiliser you can trust.  

How to Choose the Best Fertiliser for Grass 

There are three main factors to consider when you’re shopping for grass fertiliser.  

• The Type of Grass – What grass are you trying to grow/maintain and how long do you keep it?  
• The Area the Grass is In – Does the grass get plenty of natural light? Is it prone to flooding and water retention?  
• The Time of Year you’re Using Fertiliser – Soil has different levels of nutrients depending on the time of year, so you need to know what needs topping up.  

The best fertiliser for grass will also depend on the issues you’re facing. For example, if your soil is growing moss, you should consider a fertiliser with a high iron content that will discourage moss growth.  

Straight fertilisers focus more on one particular primary nutrient, while compound fertilisers combine multiple to improve overall health.  

Here’s a breakdown of the different chemicals included in fertilisers: 

N – Nitrogen is used to promote growth. Higher N fertilisers are often used in Spring and Summer.  

P – Phosphates promote strong root profiles, meaning that the roots grow deeper and find more moisture.  

K – Potassium promotes hardiness, resisting weather and disease.  

Fertilisers use a combination of the above letters (N, P, and K) as well as numbers.  

For example, if you want grass to grow faster, a fertiliser with high Nitrogen content such as an 11-5-5 is ideal. But if you want better root profiles, use a 3-6-5 in Autumn or Winter.

When to Apply Fertiliser to Grass

If you fertilise in summer, you’ll be promoting extra grass growth, and will protect it from high temperatures and harsh sunlight.  

In the colder months, fertiliser improves root growth, strengthening the soil so that the new grass grows in well when the weather improves.  

The best time of year to use fertiliser will also depend on the type of fertiliser you purchase.  

The Different Types of Fertiliser 

There are two main types of fertiliser, granular and liquid.  

Granular fertilisers need rain or manual watering to work best. This means you should apply them during early mornings when dew is present, or in cooler conditions later on in the afternoon/evening. 

Liquid fertilisers allow for fast absorption, allowing them to solve issues quickly. They only work on dry soil, with no watering necessary. As a result, they are best applied in summer.  

As the weather can be temperamental in the UK, with rain showers throughout the year, we only recommend liquid fertilisers to experienced groundskeepers, as their experience will ensure that they’re used at the optimal time.
